About Stanford Medicine 25

Modern medicine offers extraordinary diagnostic tools. But in an age of rapid imaging and lab work, something vital has been lost: the art of examining a patient with your own eyes and hands.

Too often, the physical exam is overlooked in the later years of medical school and residency. Without a high-stakes assessment for bedside skills—unlike the written board exams—there’s little incentive to master them. Yet the stakes for our patients couldn’t be higher.

At Stanford, we believe a careful physical exam can prevent missed diagnoses, reduce unnecessary tests, and build trust between doctor and patient. It’s not just about clinical accuracy—it’s about presence, attentiveness, and care.

Our Mission

The Stanford Medicine 25 exists to restore the physical exam to its rightful place at the center of medical care.

We teach not just the theory, but the technique—because knowing what to look for isn't enough if you can’t perform the maneuver correctly. A misidentified reflex, a skipped heart sound, or an unexamined rash can change a diagnosis entirely.

From neurology and dermatology to primary care and infectious disease, we help clinicians sharpen the skills that help them see, listen, and feel more deeply. Our approach blends tradition with innovation, compassion with precision.

And we’ve seen the demand firsthand: our residents are eager to reclaim these skills—and our patients are grateful to be truly seen.

Why "25"?

The number is symbolic.

We started with 25 key physical exam techniques—not because there are only 25 worth knowing, but because we had to start somewhere. You could call it the Stanford 50 or the Stanford 200, and it would still be true.

Whether you begin with one, five, or 25 maneuvers, our message is the same: Start. Learn. Master. And carry those skills to the bedside with confidence.

We’re continuously adding new content, expanding far beyond the original list. But the spirit of "25" remains: a call to action, a place to begin.
